SVOP will be required for -
This
section applies to a vessel of up to 10 gross tonnage that is
not a fishing vessel or passenger-carrying vessel, beginning on
November 7, 2010.
This section applies to a
passenger-carrying vessels of up to 5 gross tonnage or not more
than 8 m in overall length that is not a fishing vessel,
beginning on November 7, 2009.

This is a 3 day course
for
operators and those in charge
aboard small commercial vessels
(Transport
Canada Approved)
Topics covered include:
- Enhance
survival of yourself and colleagues in the marine environment
- Know
the proper use and function of immersion suits, lifejackets, PFD's and
buoyant work suits
- Understand
fires, fire prevention and the use of firefighting equipment
- Know
your responsibilities in marine emergency
- Understand
distress calls, rescue and other emergency response procedures
- Understand
vessel construction, drives and engines
- Know
how to secure a vessel to a floating or non-floating wharf and anchor
effectively
- Know
safe boating procedures
- Understand
the Canadian buoyage systems
- Understand
and use marine forecasts
- Understand
the principle of small vessel steering including tiller and wheel control
- Know
start-up, shut-down and maneuvering procedures
- Know
procedures to be followed to avoid pollution of the marine environment
